From Portugal to LA via Heathrow (and a £7 Pret porridge that tasted like regret), I eventually landed in California bleary-eyed, suitcase MIA, courtesy of British Airways. A few hours later, after a dash through Target for the essentials, I was behind the wheel heading south to San Diego. Sunglasses on, matcha in hand, Hermanos Gutiérrez on low in the background. Tired but smug — California’ll do that to you.
The mission? Pre-season training with Alex Albon.
A few days of gym sessions, one very sandy beach run interrupted by an army of dogs, and a lot of pointing cameras at a man far fitter than I’ll ever be. Lily — Alex’s girlfriend and professional golfer — joined us too, along with his performance coach Patrick, who handled logistics, stretching, and general reality checks.
One afternoon, we hit the golf course. Naturally, Lily was excellent. Alex kept up. I mostly tried to stay out of the way. On the final night, we played frisbee at sunset — badly, and just for the laughs. It was warm, easy, and low-key. The calm before the chaos of the 2025 season.
